About Me
increased security using a beautiful new fence

I own a landscape supply company and have done fairly well over the years. Until recently, security was never an issue, but then, I had two thefts occur. Someone had stolen mulch and gravel from my supplies. I knew that it was time for me to get serious about increasing security to prevent it from happening a third time. I talked with a fencing contractor about what type of fencing would help improve security without taking away from the pleasant appearance of the grounds. My blog will tell you how we accomplished the increased security using a beautiful new fence.

How To Choose A Material For Your Outdoor Stair Railing

Carter Hopkins

If you have stairs that lead into your house from the outside or stairs that lead up to your porch, chances are good that you are going to want to keep the railing that is next to them in good shape, especially during the icy winter. If you do not do this, you risk having people slip on the stairs and not be able to catch themselves. If your railing has started to degrade, you are going to need to make sure that you replace it right away. Here are some tips for choosing a material for your outdoor stair railing should you need to replace it.

1. For those who want to install the railing and forget it:

If you want to be able to install a railing and then promptly forget about it, then you want to install a metal railing. Metal railings require very little maintenance, are weather resistant naturally without you having to apply protective coatings, and are strong enough to bear up under the harshest conditions. However, they are usually slightly more expensive than other types of railings and might not be the most attractive railing for your home.

2. For those with a rustic house:

If you have a more rustic looking house, then you want to get a railing that matches the outside of your house so that the aesthetic appeal is not dampened. You can do this by installing a wooden railing that has not been carved in any way. The natural beauty of the wood will bring out the rustic sensibility of your home and make it easier for you to keep the look together. However, in order to have a wooden railing, you are going to need to regularly coat it with a UV protection coating in order to keep the wood from being damaged by the sun. You will also need to waterproof the wood in order to keep splinters from forming.

3. For those with a low budget:

If you have a lower budget, then you will probably want to go with an aluminum railing. Aluminum railings are one of the cheaper types of railings, but tend to be relatively durable. They are not as aesthetically pleasing as railings that are made out of other materials but they do not have to be replaced regularly.
